New Theme

Monday, April 9th, 2007

Doing stuff is so over-rated, I think I must have broken the record for the world’s laziest man 3 or 4 times over this long easter weekend, I blame the lack of anything being open due to “religious holiday”, I don’t see the internet or TV shutting down for easter so why should the trains and shops?

Anyway enough anti-organized religion ranting, I have some real news!

I’ve been procrastination so much the past few days that I managed to go full circle and make something useful, a tasty new theme for the blog.

Since I had my Moo cards printed I couldn’t go crazy and change the look entirely otherwise the cards wouldn’t be much use, but I’ve managed to make the site look more open and inviting whilst keeping with the same kind of style (the font in the logo has changed ever so slightly too)

So what do you think? I made it pretty much completely offline and uploaded it via my mobile phone so I’ve not tested it much, there may be some bugs that I’ve not seen and IE6 functionality is a mystery to me too!

I’m thinking of putting more content in the footer and reducing the number of posts shown on the homepage, any other cool suggestions are very welcome
:)

  1. just found that its difficult to start the first comment on a new post. something you might look at. theres only a small area to click on (which is almost invisible) to add a comment

  2. Ok mike I’ll look into that, thanks :)

  3. Sorry mate.

  4. Yeah looks cool, and it scales well too I see :)

  5. When you say looks the same taoski, do you mean you see the old theme or that your seeing the same problem as mike?

Thanks Ryan, btw what do you mean by scales well? I didn’t design it with scaling in mind!

  6. Looks good, except the mouse over color for links on the sidebar is white, so they disappear when you go over them. Tad annoying…

Also, I remember you used to do Wordpress themes for others, I’m just wondering if you still do that and what your price is. I would appreciate it if you could let me know via email.

  7. Oh yeah, thanks Brad I’ll fix that right away!

As for making themes for other people.. as much as I love cold hard cash, doing design work for other people drove me mad, I don’t know if i just had bad luck with my clients or I was doing something wrong but it really put me off doing it anymore.

Although I never had that problem when making themes for friends for free, I guess when they weren’t paying they didn’t pick holes in everything so much, two such examples are http://lost.rapnix.com and http://frostyivan.co.uk

  8. I for one love the new theme, it’s quite modern and clean cut.. just the way I like it, though the tagline could use a bit of work (something to make it look a bit more stylish?)

  9. Yeah definitely, Stabani, I’ll have a think about it, got to loose the em on it as well!

    Thanks :)

  10. I like this theme more than the last one. Having the side panels a light colour rather than black helps a lot.

How long will this theme last though? ;o)

  11. Well the last one hung around for quite a while, I’m going to try for a more incremental approach rather than massive great changes now, see how that goes

  12. hey nez, as i was saying, on your new post, “this video made my day” to make a new comment is hard to do, only a small place to click on. sorry to bang on about this

    machernucha on April 10, 2007 7:54 pm

  13. Ah ok, I get ya

You can actually click on the title of the post to get to the comment form too, but i’ll do a little switcheroo and make the comments link a bit more obvious :)

  14. I meant that it kinda looks the same all over really. Just a little more spaced out I guess..

Looks a little different today. maybe those 2 whiskeys I have had might have had some influence?

    Taoski on April 10, 2007 10:22 pm

  15. Good ol’ Tao

I tried to keep it looking similar but improve on it by making it a bit wider and lighter, plus a funky footer.

I was just worried that somehow you had managed to cache the old version!

  16. No worries about the design thing Andrew, was just curious since I really don’t have the time to do it myself. You could always do it for free ;)
