Half-Years Resolutions

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006

It’s a little bit late, or a little bit early but I feel like doing some more resolutions, I made a number of them at the start of the year, which I feel I kept to pretty well, so now I want to re-assess my goals, set my self some more targets and aim even higher.

  • Less procastination - I tend to push some boring and tendious things down my todo list, and avoid doing them, from now on I’ll get them out of the way as soon as possible instead.
  • Attempt to be less shy - I can be incredibly shy when it comes to phone calls or asking people for help, as well as being very quiet when I meet new people, I’m not sure how I’ll change the quietness, but I can definatly change my shyness on the phone.
  • Keep pushing with my business - I’ve started, so I can’t drop out now. I need to put as much effort into every part of running the business as I possibly can.
  • Not only learn new things, but expand my knowledge in existing areas - I want to catch up with my C# as well as learning the new web technologies like Ruby on Rails.
  • Improve my design skills - I’m good with css and xhtml, but I’ve been struggling to make really good looking sites. Again not sure how I’m going to do that, at the moment I’m getting Lauren to help me do the designs for sites and I translate them into a site.
  • Expand my portfolio - I want more examples and show cases of work I’ve done, and the only way to do that is by doing some work!!

I’ve also reshuffled my “Technologys and Languages” list, these are things I want to learn or improve on over the rest of the year:

  • Ruby on Rails - I’m loving what I have learnt so far, once I have a firm grasp on Rails I’ll delve into a bit more Ruby too.
  • Javascript - Another essential web technology, also required for writing firefox and songbird extensions.
  • Flash/Actionscript - Flash has always taken a backseat for me, I don’t need it yet, but I’m sure I will sometime.
  • Illustrator CS - I still get frustrated at home this works, but some of the results that come out of it looks amazing, the kind of things I can’t do in photoshop.
  • Linux - Mainly ubuntu, I feel like I have only jsut dipped into Linux, there is so much more to learn.
  • OSX - Not a world away from XP, and nowhere near as complex as Linux, the only thing that has stopped me doing this yet is my lack Mac!

  1. it’s always good to re-access your goals in order to better set your life straight. right now i am in the same process too. One thing, make a site version for the psp.

  2. What does a psp version entail? Can I just make a mobile one or is there a certain width you would like?

  3. a certain width would be nice, but more importantly, the ability to browser using the psp with great ease.
That being said, it wasn’t so bad with this version!

  5. What book are you using to learn Ruby on Rails? Any good websites/tutorials?

    Thanks.

  6. I’m in the same boat with you about being shy on the phone. For some strange reason, I just don’t like to call people. I’d much rather talk to them in person or via email. I’d like to know how you go about getting better on that.

  7. Phone conversations take some getting used to. I’m generally a pretty shy person too. I used to do tech support at the University I went to and found the more I did it the more comfortable I became with it. You’ll get better with time.

  8. I’m pretty sure that there is an older version of Mac OSX for PC. I can’t remember how to install it, but you can lol.

  9. […] Last year I made some resolutions, I even made some in July as well, my mini targets really help my target where I’m going. I’ve been looking forward to writing some new ones for this brand new year… […]
