Great Web Design (part 1)

Friday, October 6th, 2006

I’m really starting to get into the nitty gritty of my work. Incase I forgot to mention I’m a designer at a new internet start-up.

I am responsible for all of the look and feel, user interaction, navigation and visual style of the site. Since starting this job I’ve noticed that I have been analyzing existing site design more closely, seeing what works and what doesn’t.

Rather than reading in books, I’m studying successful and useful websites big and small, trying to squeeze best bits of each.

What makes great design?

Over the next couple weeks or so I’m going to attempt to delve into different parts of design, hopefully teaching myself some stuff as well as writing some useful and interesting articles.

First up is navigation.

I want to see your favorite examples of great navigation and what you think makes a site easy to navigate and intuitive to use. Be it based on Flash, Javascript or just plain CSS.

  1. Nice plain top navigation, it should be universal so we all know where it is, I especially like the navigation at http://5thirtyone.com, which I took the idea for my sites navigation. I like descriptions under navigation on rollover, it shows more about the link without being obtrusive to the overall design. The only place I can find an example of this is my site http://binarybull.com, I haven’t been able to find it elsewhere…
