My first Rails app

Sunday, July 2nd, 2006 - 6 Comments

Today I made my first Rails app - a simple tumblelog.

It was quite an experience, I had no problems with rails or ruby but mysql has caused me more than a few headaches over the past week. Every stumbling point so far in the book has been due to mysql, I have used mysql before and it is certainly harder to use via command prompt than Rails.

So I grabbed this: http://www.mysql.com/products/tools/administrator/

And within 5 mins my tumble log was up and running, the ability to see what is going on in the database and on the server in the form of tables, graphs and data all easily accessed via these wonderful things called “Buttons”, with a button you do not need to know every mysql function and argument, you just click the button with the correct name.

mysqlYou linux chaps can learn from that, people like buttons!!!

Anyway back to my tumblelog, it has a page which displays all the posts, with date and the authors name, the abilty to edit posts and a page to enter new ones, very tasty.

I haven’t bothered to put any styles on it yet, it’s just raw text and tables but now I have got passed my mysql problems I feel like nothing is holding me back from creating some really cool sites and apps.

It’s only running on my home pc at the moment, I have not reach deployment in the book yet, but it is very promising, if you are a web developer or programmer and haven’t tried it then what are you waiting for?

Getting on with it

After my first driving lesson in 3 years on friday, which went very well. I was driving a new mini, which is a very nice car, I still get confused at round-abouts but everything else went great once i got used to the car, my reversing and parking practise in my van worked a treat.

The instructor suggested I get myself a test soon so I have booked up my test for 11th August, my next lesson is Friday.

I’ve also began to roll out some fishbitt stuff, at the moment there is just a notice page and a development weblog fishlog.

You can keep up with news about fishbitt there, I have not done a huge amount to fishbitt yet, without the finished logo and visual style from the designer I can’t do much with Fishbitt on the css side, and without some css I don’t know what div tags to use on the XHTML, I want to get going and pour all my energy into it but it will have to wait.

I recieved 10 Ubuntu and 10 Kubuntu cds in the post today, so I can start spreading some love, I think one of the main stumbling points of me switching more people to linux are cheap crappy webcams and other usb devices which have been programmed on the cheap and barely work for windows, let alone Linux and MSN.

It seems that kids want msn and all its horrible junk that comes along with it (winks, adverts, pictures, what song they are playing and adverts everywhere!), not really much I can do about that except wow them with XGL!!

I also bought a firefox t-shirt and stickers, they should hopefully be here during the week. Perfect for putting on my tool box, I think I’m up to about 10 web2 stickers on there, any suggestions for tools I should carry?

I’m also speeding through a Ruby on Rails book, I can’t wait to start building my own web app but I’m not quite far enough through it yet to do that.

Erm, what other news do I have…. oh I got the Billy Talent II album and it was a bit of a disapointment, not as good as I hoped I think they lost their punky-ness and sound a bit too much like Iron maiden now, still I’ll give them a chance and see how they perform on saturday when I see them live in Cardif.
